Talk show host fights 2 legal battles
Ohio residents involved in child custody and divorce disputes might be interested in the recent legal battles of Sherri Shepherd. Her husband of two years has filed for separation, and a surrogate bearing their child is due to give birth to a boy on July 28. Shepherd’s husband is requesting custody of the unborn boy and spousal support. Reports say that he signed a prenuptial agreement, but he plans on fighting the document in court.
In addition, her first husband has reportedly referred to Shepherd as a negligent mother. The man is seeking to claim sole custody of their eight-year-old son, who was born prematurely and has special needs. He filed an emergency request, which was refused by a judge, but a hearing for the case has been scheduled for August. Shepherd and her first husband were divorced in 2009 after eight years of marriage because of an alleged affair that he had in 2006. Shepherd claims that she discovered pictures of her husband having sex with another woman whom he later impregnated.
According to her first husband, Shepherd has minimal time to take care of the boy who lives in New Jersey with her. As a host, actress, author and comedienne with a heavy speaking engagements schedule, the boy is often left with what he alleges are unskilled nannies. He feels powerless to help his son to get the help that he needs with his extensive developmental delays. The man is a resident of California. Shepherd has responded by filing court papers that refer to him as an absentee father.
When married couples with children split up, agreeing on child custody matters can be difficult. Often, one parent will think that it is in the best interest of the child if he or she gets sole custody. A family law attorney could help individuals who a seeking to change a standing custody agreement seek a modification in court.
