Divorce Rate Is On The Decline In America

Ohio residents may not have heard the recent statistics provided by the New York Times concerning the topic of divorce. According to the article, the divorce rate is not at 50 percent like many people have heard, and it is not on the rise either. Stats have shown that it has actually been declining for some time now and that the highest divorce rates occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

There are numerous reasons for the decline in divorces in the last few decades. The 1970s feminist movement, for example, may have played a surprising role in the current decline of divorce, leading marriage into a modern-day version where equality has paved the way for relationships with a significant other to be based on love and shared passions. Many individuals are also getting married at a later age than before, producing more mature relationships. The median age to get married in the 1950s was 23 for men and 20 for women, but in 2004 it was 27 for men and 26 for women.
